The Black Douglas' are desended from Sir James Douglas, (the Bruce's Lt.) They were the most powerful clan in Scotland until James II murdered the 8th earl in 1452 & the defeated them @ Arkinholm. James then gave the "Lordship" to the Earl of Agnus ( a "Red" Douglas & Highlander ) NOTE, the Blk. Douglas' were Lowlanders ( as was The Bruce & Wallace)
The Black Douglas' are a "Armigerous Clan" ( no Chief.) Also we never a had a "Tartan" + my relatives were "Reivers"
The Tartan # is 1029 & is "modern" I wear it to "honor" my past + I LOVE it. Thankfully, even us "Lowlanders can wear the tartan, without qualms
