Hello and a warm from Boston, Massachusetts
True Scottish name???? If you know the surname that you wish to follow up on, you can try on many genealogy websites. Ancestry.com is like the Home Depot of genealogy in the U.S. In Scotland it's Scotlands Family Tree Ancestry is has many databases, some of which are not perfect. Scotlands Family Tree is a forum based web site, with many moderators and members doing the research.
As far as tartans go the previous posts have covered the best.
Enjoy ye Rabble.
