kilts, the cold, and you
I have been meaning to get a picture then get around to posting . . . here is me in my Stillwater Wool, kilt-hose (with thermal socks on top), shirt, thermo shirt, big sweater, and my thinsulate leather coat. the temp outside was -5F . . .

The hat is a Tilley insulated, I highly recommend them.

OK, I have to ask.
Why is there a fire hydrant in the desert?

In case there is a fire . . . duh.
As this thread keep going . . .
If you see and buy a thrift store wool overcoat (like the ones pictured here), you could always shorten it a few inches. It would be much the same as the jacket modifications *into Argyle-esque) shown in other thread, only a straight re-hem.

Why is there a fire hydrant in the desert? Well, it's a courtesy to the coyotes.
Serious, the pic was taken at the east end of the parking lot of the new Antelope Point Marina that the Navajos just built on the Colorado River channel of Lake Powell.
Tourists come up here in flocks in motor homes and you'd be surprised how many tourists manage to set their motor homes on fire somehow. Its a common thing up here. So, my guess is the fire hydrant is there to put out the smouldering embers of the motor home after its burned since by the time the nearest fire department could respond that's what they'd be dealing with.
And thanks for the cut down idea MacWage...never thought of that.

I love my grey wool Navy peacoat, but I'm not sure how it's going to look with my kilt yet (it'll match the Granite tartan nicely, but peacoats are sort of a weird length.) I was watching my fav movie the other night, "The Great Escape", and got to thinking that an RAF officer's jacket might work very nice...now I just have to track one down!

Hey Cat, www.whatpriceglory.com has replica War 2 RAF battlejackets.
I love mine. Jerry is cool to work with. I added the wings and chevrons to honor my father's RAF service as a Montana boy Flying Sergeant. They come plain.

Kilt is Strathmore Mills 16 ounce RAF tartan hand sewn by Kathy Lare of Kathy's Kilts in Albuquerque, NM
