IMHO the ancient Campbell tartan is a good looking tartan, I far prefer it over the modern dark tartan.

I like the ancient as well.

I think my favorite is my Canadian military issue Black Watch... it's so dark I can't tell where the blue ends and the black begins, and it's only slightly easier to distinguish the green...it's almost like a shadow tartan... it's just "shades of dark."

Well, I have to admit that I am bit biased:

My family has history with the Black Watch
I love the dark colors - especially green.
The Black Watch of Scottland has been very gracious to our paintball team.

With all of that understood . . . I LOVE THE BLACK WATCH TARTAN

Since we can't have an image in our signature here is the image that I use on other forums to show the tartan. It is a bit "jazzed" up to make the colors more visible on computer screens:

BTW - please don't view this as an attempt to bypass any rules - I am just showing it off here in this thread because it seemed appropriate.

My friend and I eyed the Black Watch tartan first for our own kilts because it is made of the colors that we associated most with kilts in our minds. It's dark colors also draw a lot less heat from nay sayers. My first kilt was thus a BW. It served its function well.

The mantra we have so often - or at least used to hear often - on these boards is "Know your Tartan."

The Black Watch has represented many brave fighting men, including the 42nd and 73rd Regiment(s) of Foot before the Childers Reform, as well as the current incarnation.

The have a long and storied service. To ignore all of that in favor of one action is a disservice to the unit and what it really represents.
