I do not play kilted for this very reason. When I'm playing kit, I play very hard and fast. Therefore, I sweat.. A lot.. Forget hygiene for a second, do you really want to sit your bare rear on leather/pleather surface covered in hot sweat. Sounds like it would be really slippery, which in my case could spell disaster.
Still want to wear a kilt to a show? Maybe do this: go out and buy some cool looking board-shorts. These are the shorts that surfers wear, they are made out of nylon and the seams are triple stitched. Wear the kilt, and just before you hit the stage, throw on the board shorts under your kilt and undo the kilt. Leave it backstage, fold it into/on top of a drum case or something. You won't be kilted on stage, but sometimes form really does follow function. If you'd like to add a dramatic flavor to the event, unkilt on stage, that makes people look twice every time! But remember, boardshorts... If you take off your kilt and you've forgotten to put on shorts first, embarrassment could follow. Then again, you might make a lot of $$ in tips, but that's another matter.
