Chase have you looked at this site?
They make sporrans such as this one, they may be just what you are looking for, I do not have one, but I have heard nothing but good things about them, I did say to myself that this would be my next sporran, then Matt ruined that with the recent Ferguson Britt sale.

however I do enjoy your pockets (well my pockets, I've had my hand in Steve's pockets).
I don't know where to begin with this
Cheers

I don't want to begin with this. I just want to know how to make it stop.

I'm a big sporran fan. They bring balance to the kilt and are very functional. All your stuff is in one, central location. With pockets, stuff is not always readily accessible.
For example, I was carrying a big heavy box, in my left hand and needed to get my keys in my left pocket. I could've put the box down, but the ground was wet, so i had to reach over with my right hand and awkwardly fish out my keys from my left pocket. If I had a sporran, they would've been right there in front with a wide opening for easy access.
Vive la sporran.

Maybe you think a particular sporran looks like a lady's purse? As someone else said, there are a lot of styles out there, and plenty of them look manly to me. If you want to wear a sporran and have it feel comfortable, find one you *really* like and I'll bet your apprehension will disappear.
I've got a pair of Freelanders and a Ferguson Britt Glengyle Beaver sporran from the The Scottish Tartans Museum. I think they're both unique and they are certainly well-loved!
(I wrote this right after you posed the question quoted above, but couldn't post it until now. Just look at all the people that want you to be just like them and wear a sporran! It really is safer if we all agree to wear sporrans. )

beloitpiper, that's a good point. As I said before, I was wearing a sporran before I wore kilts. Pant pockets are a little different issue than kilt pockets. I hate having keys and stuff in my pant pockets... And a wallet is uncomfortable to sit on. Still, I just don't go for the flashy, fancy sporrans.

I never heard of sporranphobia before!
For me a sporran makes a statement that the kilt is a masculine garment and completes it. Like McClef I don't wear a sporran in my home, but do outside.

I don't know if this helps, but....
I've made most of my own sporrans. The ones I now use regularly are the survivors of intense "natural selection", whereby the losers were taken apart, rebuilt, or simply trashed. The selective force (to continue the biological analogy) was my dear wife.
Her objections to the "unfit" sporrans fell into two categories:
"It looks too scrotal."
"It looks like a woman's purse."

To me the Kilt looks strange without the Sporran. More like just a skirt. UK's don't have one but there are still studs in front. I reckon something needs to be in front, just to offset the expanse of flat apron.
Besides, you can always keep nifty things in a sporran. Hand grenade, pepper spray, Hankie, Live Cobra, - just the usual things.......(Huh? What?)

I too am a bit flustered about the sporran thing. You have to have someplace to carry stuff but I have tried a couple different sporrans, chains, leather straps and belt hangers with what I wouold consider to be limited success and comfort. For some reason having that sporran thing jangling around right on top of my other jangly things just never feels quite right. I do have a lovely arctic fox full mask sporran that I plucked off ebay for cheap (so cheap I don't want to say how much here---it might incite an envy riot) which does sit a bit more comfortably, but just does not feel right for everyday use, being such a lovely piece of workmanship of both god and man.
I may have found a partial solution---I just ordered a couple belt pouches from a vendor on ebay. Basically look like a leather day sporran, with a little color added, but instead of a separate chain, strap, or hangers, it has wide belt loops on the back and simply hangs a bit higher on your waist directly from the belt. More secure I hope. Can be worn off center, or in midline but would cover my belt buckle. Will let all know when I get them and have a chance to try them out.
