I love my UKs and wear them lower. My next purchased kilt will likely be an SWK and I expect bto wear it at the navel. UKs are off the rack (but can be hemmed) and the quality is consistent. For a gentleman of girth, I recommend checking their Scratch & Dent list for one with a floating waistband. I have found UKs sturdy and easy to care for.
Buzz Kidder and Freedom Kilts are HIGHLY recommended on this site. FKs are custom and the service & quality are said to be beyond reproach.

I wear my sport kilt at the hips as if i wore it at the waist it would be 2 inches too short. so it should be ok to wear at the hips SOMETIMES.

I agree with the above site and video. He covers all aspects of kilt measurement. I had never seen non-trad kilts before coming here. I had heard of Utilikilts and their ilk on a hiking page but I considered these to be some sort of cultural aberration to be avoided at all costs. Blasphemy! But it is a very slippery slope. I have made myself a cotton canvas work kilt, downloaded the plans for an X-Kilt, and I know it's only a matter of time before I send the email to FK (must resist!)(at least till oil prices come down or summer gets here)(or work tons of OT)
The depth of knowledge and wealth of info here is extraordinary.

First of all, from both southern US coasts!

My first two kilts are UKs. They were a great way to break into kilts; made me want more. They are measured to wear at the hips like jeans.

It felt a bit weird to belt on a more traditional kilt at the waist (about the belly button), but it feels as though the bottom of the belt hits about where the UK starts, so I got used to it pretty quickly.

I definitely recommend a sporran belt over chain. Unless you have a formal event to go to (which I don't) you won't need a chain. The belt is definitely easy to adjust. I got so used to a sporran and belt, I was wanting to wear one even with jeans. But I haven't gotten that brave yet.

OK, the sporran.. what do you mean by; "No belt when wearing a vest". ...Sorry, I'm a newbie.

The belt referred to in this case is the one you wear around your waist, not the sporran belt.

I think I will take your corporate advice and lose the chain.

What is a sporran hanger? Even before I know what it is I want one!
