Hose?

Speaking strictly for myself, I always wear hose and garters if I go out of the house. That goes for t-shirt and kilt or formal shirt and kilt. I find that the hose establish the garment as a kilt to the casual observer.

Its clothing not a uniform! Wear what is comfortable for you. On a hot day in Scotland (is that an oxymoron) do you think a Scot would wear wool hose to go out walking through steams chasing sheep? Can you spell felting?

With a tartan kilt, definitely, I find that hose, flashes, and a sporran, even if with just a "Real Men Wear Kilts" tshirt or the like really make the "kilt" look.

For me, hose are a formality or warmth option. If it's warm out and casual I will either wear regular socks scrunched down or sandals and no socks (or even barefoot). If it's cold out or a more formal affair I wear hose pulled up. I never wear hose scrunched down because to me it's useless to wear fancy, expensive socks and then push them down so that nobody can see them.

If its too warm for woolen hose then its perhaps also way too warm for a woolen kilt.

The "standard" dress attire with shorts in Bermuda is knee socks (roughly the same length as with kilts).

Not all hose are expensive. Some are quite simple. For use with lightweight "casual" (4-yd) kilts one can wear knee socks as above. They are available in summer grade wool, cotton and even silk.

Whats the point of scrunched down hose? Beyond a "look" its also about options. One can, when wanted (to be more presentable or when it gets cooler in the evenings) pull them up.

Along with the Bermuda shorts already mentioned, I'm quite used to wearing "shooting" or "walking" socks with short trousers. I -personally speaking, here- wouldn't wear anything other than hose pulled up with the kilt. Wool is a breathable fibre, so it will keep you cool, to a degree, in warmer weather. In very hot weather, if you don't want to wear short socks or scrunched down kilt hose, why not get some cotton hose?

Dude, I am sure you are no worse off than I am. I have been called a skinny sasquatch more than once in my day. Honestly if anyone has a problem with your body hair thats their issue, not yours. In my experience guys dont notice and most girls arent looking for hairless wonders. Whatever you do, do it with confidence!

Ever see traditional shooting attire in the Highlands? Or as Nanook mentioned, the hose/socks worn with traditional Bermuda shorts? The British Army in tropical climes also wore the famous "Bombay bloomers" with knee socks, not to mention the Boy Scouts!
