OK, let's say you HATE PLAID....you just absolutely bloody HATE anything plaid, 'cause it makes you look like some dowdy so-and-so and it's boring and it makes everybody look fat and on and on and on.

OK.

So get a solid color skirt in a color that's in your man's tartan, and wear that with a simple scoop-neck tshirt. If you get it from Neokilt they'll do some cool embroidery on it for you.





Are you into embroidery? Well could you not make yourself an X-Kilt, tapered to fit your hips, in a solid color to match your mans tartan and embroider a celtic design along the apron?

on an olive or brown colored X-kilt, worn next to your mans Weathered tartan kilt? There are places that can take any 1-2-3-4-5-6 color artwork available as a .jpg or .gif or .bmp file and put it into their computerized embroidery machines and crank out a custom job for you in a couple of days, if you're not into it, yourself.

Perhaps a simple, lightweight black pleated kiltskirt with a clan crest patch sewn in where a man would wear a kilt pin on his kilt?

I must say that is an attractive skirt. I may be biased as it is Cunningham tartan but so be it. Thanks for posting a pic. I rarely see any garments constructed in my family tartan.

I own a 'ladies kited skirt'. It goes on much like a man's kilt with overlapping aprons and buckles and a kilt pin. It is cut for a lady and is the proper length just below the knee. It is of a weaver's choice not a clan tartan. I have worn it with a dressy blouse with jabot as well as other dress blouses. Can I wear it in a more casual form? What shirt/ top would be appropriate (the corset look would not go). And what do I wear on my feet? Summer heat is too hot for nylon (or silk) hosiery and dress shoes are not practical at highland games.

Sure you can wear it more casually. I'd follow "the Hamish Principle" meaning....don't wear stuff that will distract from the tartan. In other words, team that same skirt up with a white or black scoop-neck tshirt when it's hot. The tartan is complex. top it off with something simple.

for shoes I'd stay away from running shoes or athletic shoes...and I'd stay away from the neoprene zorrie's that the girls are wearing, but simple, black flats should work fine.

Can you wear kilt hose? Sure you can. The only problem might be that you *might* wind up looking like a schoolgirl and I would AVOID white kilt socks...which look like schoolgirl knee sox, with a plaid skirt at knee length, and a white buttoned-up blouse. Add black mary jane shoes to that and you'll look like a bad attempt at a Catholic Schoolgirl fantasy!

Sweet, but I wouldn't.

I like Alan's idea of flat black slipper style shoes if I can find them with enough support and traction. I've always had good luck with Easy Spirits.

I'm still not sure about the sock/hose though and I hate putting my bare feet into shoes (especially in TN summer heat!). Perhaps a thin knee high in gray with the black flat... ? Of course if I could find argyle socks to match...
(subtle not distracting).

As for tops, the t-shirt idea may work if it is a ladies scoop neck or princess neckline style they are just dressier and more attractive on the feminine form.
The cashmere sweater sounds lovely and would be appropriate in winter here but the temperatures can get into the 100's (F) in TN with very high humidity.

I love tartan, but I have to say that I adore those solid color kilted skirts with the embroidery on the apron like that. And ooooh... fiddle! ;)

I have to admit, I was very tempted to go ahead and order a Stillwater Thrifty just so I'd have something while I waited for my chance to get what I'm really wanting. Why should my hubby have all the fun? I'm just not sure if I should or not. The stock goes down so quickly especially for the smaller sizes (even though I'd probably wear it slightly lower on my hips instead of at my waist where I'd wear most skirts), not to mention the tartans are a bit limited. We'll see, though. I think if I wore it just right, it'd fall right on the lower part of my knee if not slightly lower. Just depends on how it all works out (which is partially why I figured why not try a Thrifty, because of the velcro.... aside from the price).

I figure I've written enough in this thread... a third of it is me! I've posted something like 25-30 pictures of all sorts of lasses wear. It's time for me to kind of bow out and let you lasses (and the lads that admire them) take over.

Last comment...a kilt or a kilt skirt doesn't HAVE to be tartan. Solid color works just fine, and will look great standing next to your lad in his kilt if you can match one of the colors in his tartan.

Alan, thanks for getting the thread started and keeping it going. Thanks, too, for posting so many photos. It definitely gets the mind whirring with ideas.

I'll try to keep coming back to this thread (although I'm wondering if we lasses can have our own tiny little category, perhaps? pretty please?) and when I do get outfits and photos, I'll be sure to post them.
