I'm going to put this out to query the expertise of the group;
Do you have a preferred thread when machine sewing?
I have mostly used Coats and Clark purely out of convenience...because it seems to be available everywhere.
Is Gutermann any better or worse? Are there any other brands worth considering? Is so, what are the advantages? Even "expensive" thread is cheap compared to the overall cost of most projects, so I'm open to change!

I have found that the Gutermann or Metterle are better in my machine that the Coats and Clark, they are made from a long staple cotton and produce far less lint in the machine. Just found a new one called Presencia that is even cleaner, it can be found often at good quilt shops. Great Kilting

Excellent! Another to add to my recommended list. I'll keep an eye out for it.

I use Coats and Clark 100% nylon. Its tough as nails for the projects that I do. Granted, I use it on light leather and canvas. . . .

In an amazing display of coincidence, I just went to the fabric shop and discovered that the old familiar Dual Duty display had been replaced with a new rack of the newly released "Dual Duty XP" thread. 100% polyester core wrapped with 100% polyester. I bought a spool and am using it on a camo kilt I'm putting together. Works very well in my Singer. Seems to be nearly identical to Guttermann's in diameter and break-strength. I haven't used it for hand-stitching yet, but it looks like it has about the same stiffness, so I'm thinking it should be comparable in that arena as well.

Coats has a thread production plant not far from Asheville (yes, the North Carolina textile industry isn't entirely dead!), so I'm glad to see a domestic source of quality thread.

If anyone can provide a more informed comparison between this and the other 100% poly threads I'd be very interested. Barb T, have you tried it?

No, actually I haven't. Maybe I'll stroll over and get a spool of white for basting. That's where the shredding and clumping shows up best, because you not only put the thread in but pull it all back out again. If you hear loud cursing and swearing from the general vicinity of Upstate NY, you'll know if didn't go well. But I'll post something after I've tried it.
