The blog does do a good job of describing what this is. It's interesting, and I like the idea. Thanks for sharing that Matt.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Awesome. Beautiful. Would you consider doing this as an add-on for your custom kilts? At some point I'd love to hear how much you'd charge for the additional work!

I agree with the others. I like this look better than the fly plaid. It looks great.

Well, the largest difference is that this is quite larger than most fly plaids. Modern fly plaids vary in size, but most seem to be about 36" x 36". I've seem them as large as 54" x 54" which is approaching the size of this peice.
The plaid I have made is 72" (two yards) long, and 54" wide.
Typical fly plaids today are fringed on all four sizes, and one corner is tailored into pleats. It is this pleated corner that you wear pinned at the shoulder, and the rest is usually left to hang free. I suppose with a larger fly plaid, if you tucked some of the cloth in to your belt in the back, it would approach this in appearance. I don't really think you could make it happen that well with a smaller fly plaid.
This one I have made has the pleating done along the width of it, though, not in a corner. And two of the corners are brought together to pin at the shoulder. The orientation of the plaid is horizontal, also, rather than diagonal, which also adds to the resmblance to the old belted plaid.

Sure, I wouldn't mind at all. The bulk of the cost would be in the material. And I'd have to add in some for my labor, of course. But it's really only a few hours work. If anyone was interested in one, I'd be happy to get them a price quote -- just email me and let me know what tartan.
Aye,
Matt

Thank you, sir!
Well, money's tight these days so I won't inquire from you now about the pricing, but I definitely see myself interested in this in the future. (When I can afford to put myself on the list for a new new Newsome kilt!) You do great work, Matt. Thanks much!

That is very, very cool, Matt. It reminds me of Liam Neeson's kilt from "Rob Roy". Before his big fight scene at the end of the flick, Rob took off his plaid and fought in his philabeg.
