As for a Kiltmaker, I think you should check out Barb Tewksbury, she recently did up a kilt for me, and I could not be happier with it, no matter where I wear it I get possitive remarks it really is a beauty.
Here is my review

You dont happen to be an attendee of our fine HPF every year do you? Love to meet up with ya if you are and see first hand the quality of these kilts you are talking about.

I have definitly come to the conclusion that my first tank should be made by either Barb or Kathy Lare. I have seen numerous pics here of both their work and the reviews can't be more glowing for both of them. I am going to be ordering sometime around the first or second week of May so i guess i better decide pretty quick huh? lol
Be Well

HI! There's a fair number of us in and around eastern KS, western MO. Five at the KC Tartan Days earlier this month. Wallace and Bishop will hopefully chime in on what it's like to wear a tank in this climate.
MacKenzie? Family tartan, or just like the look of it? If family, hello, cousin!

Hello and a warm from Boston, Massachusetts.
For your new kilt. the 16 oz will hang better and is really easier to care for than 13 oz. Much better swish factor, and the pleats stay very lovely. For the temperature department, I have worn my 16oz Scottish Wool kilt in the July Texas weather. I also wear an Elizabethan era outfit for reenactments, that is made of wool. Tunic 13 oz. Doublet and breeks are 16 oz. with two layers of Wool kilt hose in July. Surprise to me is that the wool is a great insulator. My 16 oz Wool kilt is more comfortable (including heat wise) than being in loose cotton shorts.
I personally have nothing against the Scottish Lion other than the service turned out to be slower than any of the vendors advertising on this board. Also they seem to have occasional difficulty with tartan accuracy. I had ordered some accessories in Loch Carron McNeil of Barra Ancient. They shipped one item in modern and the next in Lamont Ancient. The items took three months. I had even gone to their store in North Conway and picked up one of the correct item off the shelf during the waiting time!?!
For my purposes now I have various weight kilts.
Rocky @ USA Kilts makes some fantastic Polyviscous kilts that are great for the both the summer heat and the ease of keeping clean. He and Kelly are now doing more traditional wool kilts as well.
For a great and inexpensive Acrylic kilt that arrives within seconds of submitting the order there is Stillwater Kilts in the semi traditional line. Jerry's delivery time is fast.
For a box pleat kilt that will last forever there is Matt Newsome, on this board.
For hand sewn traditional there are none better than Barb T or Kathy Lare as you have noted. Please consult with your chosen kilt maker as to the way that kilt maker wants the measurements and seek their advise on pleating and weight of the tartan that you should choose. Each tartan has unique features that the experienced kiltmaker needs to work into the construction of a kilt you will be proud of for many years to come.
