Thanks guys. White shirt it will be. Now what do you think about hose colour? I know the convention is that the shirt and hose should match, but is this necessary if a jacket and waistcoast are being worn, not much of the shirt shows? I have off-white, black, and dark green (two pairs with different shades) and could probably borrow my brother's Lovatt blue hose.
Oh, and... ghillie or regular brogues? I have both. Probably regular, eh?

Sorry, I don't know about these things, but is the hose matching the shirt a real convention? What is the different between ghillie and regular brogues?

It's often been said here that it looks good to match the hose with the color of the shirt. However, as has been said, if you wear a jacket much of the shirt is covered. I like to match my hose with my jacket. Both should be toned to coordinate with the kilt.
I find the having the hose matching the dominant color on the torso sort of frames the kilt.
And of course, this is not a "rule". It is one way to present a coordinated and balanced appearance.

Thanks, Dave. I guess I hadn't noticed those threads among the many topics of interest on here. It might be irrelevant, since this convention leaves me wearing either black or white hose to go either with my black Argyll (barathea?) or a plain dress shirt.
Lucky for me I tend to go more casual when I'm kilted.

I'm quite fond of wearing black hose when I have on a black jacket.

I prefer to wear hose that pulls out one of the kilt's minor colors, like one of the stripes; but, for Black Watch, I'd wear either dark green or navy blue. Also, I recommend the ghillie brogues.
