What is the "ITI number"? Canadian Centennial.

Honourable kilt experts. Lend me your brains

What is the "ITI number". I can work out that it is a identification number for tartans, but who issues the number? Do all tartans have an ITI number? Is it widely used?

If I wanted to order a tartan that is ambiguous by name, is the ITI number a good way to specify the tartan precisely? I was thinking of the "Canadian Centennial", a name which seems to be used for three quite different tartans (ITI 1704, 1944, and 3731).

I quite like Canadian Centennial 3731

ITI is an abbreviation for "International Tartan Index" which is the name of the massive tartan database (largest on record, in fact) maintainted by the Scottish Tartans Authority. It can be searched by using the "tartan ferret" feature on their web site at:
    http://www.tartansauthority.com

If you give any supplier or manufacturer of tartan the ITI number, that will pin point the specific tartan to which you are referring and avoid confusion.

Thanks very much for the information Matt. Now I just need my waistline to stop fluctuating long enough to decide the size of my next kilt.

"International Tartan Index" ... I really should have been able to guess that.

    Cheers,
