I've been an admirer of Jake's work for years. He's a really nice guy who used to frequent a sword discussion forum to which I belonged. I tried to commission a sword from him a couple years ago but he no longer takes commissions. He's a true artist in steel and wood.

Yeah; I wanted to commission something from him, and he didn't even respond to me.

Don't know that we would get away with walking around with any of those. Nice craftmanship though.

Jake's work is first class, and it all works, in addition to being pretty. As with all things fully hand made, they are expensive (relative to mass produced items). He's a fine musician, and a great human to boot.

I wouldn't take a non-response too personal from one email. It can get difficult to deal with at times, especially when you are the only one making the product, working a web site, and answering e-mail. He also has a bit of livestock and a farm to look after.

Unless/until you have walked in the shoes of a self employed craftsman who makes his living by producing things one at a time, it is very difficult to comprehend how it really works. If you get a W-2 form, it is nothing at all like what you do for a living, I assure you.

I think Jake's work is a good value (and quite possibly under-priced for the quality of work that he does), but you do have to inquire for the prices.

$2,000 and up for one of Jake's mono-steel swords is not unusual. Believe me, that's a fair price for work of that quality (especially when you consider how much popular custom knife makers charge for much smaller pieces). Jake has had his work displayed in museums and snooty art shows. His wife usually handles his web site and enquiries. As Howard said, the business end of a custom craftsman is not always where his (or her) priorities can be placed.

Doesn't take commissions and doesn't post any sort of contact address and doesn't respond to emails? Hmm... I'm not sure that would encourage me to spend any money with the man, no matter how pretty the pictures.
