Just to confuse this further...
Hodden Grey does not seem to be a pattern, but is a tartan.

I'll defer to Matt for the definitive answer, but I wouldn't consider Hodden Grey a tartan. After all, the reason why Lord Elcho chose it for the London Scottish Regiment in 1859 was to avoid "clan rivalries" associated with tartan and to identify his regiment with Scottish stalkers:

"A soldier is a man hunter. As a deer stalker chooses the least visible of colours, so ought a soldier to be clad."

Actually, the first post in this, I made clear that I wasn't discussing the garment plaid, but the difference between a tartan and plaid pattern. So, I am not sure why people keep interjecting the garment, when it's the difference between the pattern.

I hate to split hairs, but while Hodden Grey is listed as the "tartan" for the LS, it really isn't, especially if you read Lord Elcho's reasons for its adoption.

I'm not disagreeing with that. In fact, I think it was a solid idea. I doubt that it is considered a tartan by any organization outside the British Army. I think of it more as a tweed.
I was only trying to rouse some further discussion on the plaid/tartan question.
