Dying a white UtiliKilt?

You hit it sydnie7,

I bought a natural white UK workman's vegan kilt with the intent of either having it tie dyed or dyed a natural sage color using traditional Navajo dying methods. Never having dyed anything did a lot of research and worry...like about the thread showing a different color...finally, found I enjoyed it as a white kilt and left it that way. Wound up outgrowing it and passing it on - still white.

Hi Riverkilt, think I saw yours in the older thread linked in OP.

The project is certainly dropping lower on the list of priorities

Especially as one sister just passed along to me a box full of leather-working tools originally used by my father. . .

Now all I need is time! Where can I buy THAT online LOL

That Dharma link is great! Thanks! It even has dyes for poly/cotton... maybe I'll get a couple mockers to dye navy and brown. I definitely need a couple more survivals to dye...

Wow, I guess I'll have to do this over time, cuz it's gonna be expensive to buy all those kilts, and I've really been working up on getting a tartan kilt for a change... Decisions, decisions. I'll probably be dyeing my faded black survival soon enough anyways, it's not the right size for me so I don't wear it too often as it is and I'm not afraid of screwing it up.

What I've done.

Put rit dye into the washer, then set to regular wash (and I have had no problems with hot). Add UK after washer is filled. Sit there with a book, and every time the washer starts to drain, set it back to agitate. Repeat as necessary (probably 3-4 times depending on how dark you want - over an hour if you want really dark). Once you think it has been in long enough, go ahead and let it drain. Add about 1/2 bottle vinegar to the rinse. Then wash 2 more times (go ahead and use cold this time) with soap powder to make sure the loose dye is gone (adding fabric softener also fun at this point, it really helps with the wear of a Workman's). Hang to dry (it is the dryer that shrinks stuff not washing in hot).

Note, unless they have changed thread, the kilt will dye, but the threads wont. Gives you kind of a levi's look.
