Fly plaids are typically anywhere from 36" x 36" to 54" x 54". A piper's plaid is generally along the order of 3.5 yards x 54" (or whatever the width of the fabric is), with the plaid heavily pleated along the width.

However, based on Puffer's description of it as 4' x 8', and statement that it is to be worn casually or for reenacting, I think what we have here is neither a fly plaid or a piper's plaid, but an older style sometimes called a Laird's plaid or simply a shoulder plaid.
