How does one design a tartan?

That tartan weaver is pretty addictive. I play with it quite a bit during my lunch breaks at work.

I asked the members of a community of which I am a member if any of them had a tartan with which they can identify. To my surprise many members could.

So, I thought maybe I could make a tartan for our "clan". I have a long way to go so it won't happen soon, but I think I'll get there eventually.
