I can understand that completely, especially this bit : The internet should COMPLIMENT "traditional" methods of communication and interacting and buying things, not REPLACE them.

The "should" should be emphasized too. Unfortunately I dont think it is. I've made a few transactions in the last few weeks. The quickest have been the online click, enter and go. The MOST ENJOYABLE and REWARDING have been on the phone and one lengthy email interaction that felt like an extended phone call.
But I'll still go to Target/Lowes/supermarket before I go to my local(ish) hardware/general goods/grocery because it is easier.
It's easy to forget how joyous good, personal customer service can be.
