			Linen Jacket Conversion

Recently I purchased a black linen jacket from Overstock.com.
My intent was to have a jacket that's more compatible with Southern summers - particularly graveside piping.

It wasn't terribly difficult & took me the better part of an afternoon. I ended up with is a black Aryll jacket substitute that's considerably more comfortable. I followed some of the tips offered in previous conversion threads, which were quite helpful.

Standing in the afternoon sun waiting for the cleric to finish can be mighty intolerable. It seems the more inclement the weather, the longer he speaks.

Linen jackets have a loose enough weave to permit air circulation all the way to one's skin. It really helps.

Also, I'm wearing a USA semi-trad kilt. To my surprise, it's far cooler than any woolen 8-yarder.

Would love to see pics of the jacket without the pipes in front covering it all up. Would also like to see the pockets.

<< Would love to see pics of the jacket without the pipes in front covering it all up. Would also like to see the pockets. >>
Really not much to see. The pocket flaps were decorative, non-functional, and not in the way.

I used an existing Argyll jacket to get the sweep & curve for the front. The rest was just a matter of stitching.

Just thought the idea of a linen jacket instead of something of wool was a bit more novel - in a practical sort of way.

I applaud your resourcefulness! I'd love to find a light jacket - preferably in a tan or a khaki - to convert to a summer jacket. Even in Chicago it gets a bit steamy in the summertime and I try to maintain my cool while looking good. I'll have to start keeping my eyes open for some possibilities. Thanks for the inspiration.
 Best

					AA,
This company, www.duluthtrading.com , has some khaki-colored & navy blue jackets. One version is made of hemp. They're geared towards travelers, but no reason not to convert to kilt length. All of them have more pockets than Carter's has little liver pills.

The only downside I can see is you'll hafta pay full-price for the garment.

I'm considering doing this to one of my older, cheaper jackets. Would you mind showing me the edges where you cut and re-stitched?
It looks great by the way!
