It's a Paduak from Africa... i found a great place in Michigan that supplies turning woods in different exotics and selected that one, then had it shipped to the carver. It was Orange and I mean bright orange, but all the research said it would turn red. The longest piece I could find was a 2x2 36"... The finish is an oil and KC had to apply 10+ coats and it turned a most beautiful red. It was amazing and if I can find the link to the wood supplier, I will send to you if interested.
I'm considering commissioning a second piece, but for now I have two plaques in the works... a celtic cross and one that is the symbol found on the MacKay Country Gateway Signposts.
