As in the words of Jerry Sienfeld "But I don't want to be a prirate!"
Personally I don't like them.
But to each his own, if you like it and it is comfortable - Wear it!

That's a very good look alright, but especially if you opt for a more "historically correct" shirt, I think it would look just as good to wear hose that picks up one of the dominant colours in your kilt and a "natural' or cream coloured shirt. When I look at the bulk of what is being offered for 18th century shirts the colour range is limited and dress shirts are generally natural linen.
Just another 2¢ for the kitty.

Hey, I like the look of that Heritage shirt. I also like purchasing clothing and footwear that will last me a very long time. So, the heritage shirt, lovat green hose, and linen colored flashes? Seems to me a Marine on here did the very thing....Maybe this whole coordinating thing isn't so difficult...Must consult with wife...

I have always stayed away from any XMarks threads about Jacobite shirts but I'm finally going to weigh in.
I am not into "historically correct" dress and certainly dont' wear a kilt as a costume. I tend to think that a lot of people in the states eschew them as "brigadoonish" if thats a word. With all that being said the shirts themselves are very popular in Scotland and can be seen VERY often as er...."dressy casual" wear. Think boots, scrunched down hose, kilt and Jacobite shirt on a Hogmanay pub crawl. Who are we as Americans to tell the Scots that they are wearing their national dress in the wrong way? They're aren't any kilt police you know, except for McMurdo, and Grant has him under control.
They are popular around the western world, look good, feel comfortable. I know I will continue to wear the one that I purchased along with a kilt at Anderson Kilts on Academy street in Dumfries not 5 blocks from Ferintosh and will add more to the collection once I have found a source in a lighter weight fabric more suited to the Virginia climate I live in.
Ok, semi-rant over.

Sorry, Dee, but I have disagree wi' you here.
This issue really is a question of marketing -- the very name of said garment, "Jacobite shirt" implies that these shirts in question were worn by Jacobites; ergo many folks view them as "period garments".
If the Scots want to wear them, fine -- for that matter, if Yanks, Canucks, Aussies, etc. want to, then that's fine as well. They're not for me, but my real issue is folks assuming because of their name that they are somehow "authentic" Highland attire to the 18th century.

Todd

Consulting with the wife is a sign of wisdom . . . learning from mistakes!

Hmmm, looking around, I noticed that the Lewis Hose that I admire so much do not come in a linen color. So, is it acceptable that the hose do not match the shirt(complementing the kilt), but the flashes or garter ties do? I know typically that the flashes should match the kilt. Thinking that a Navy shirt in a typical cut and navy hose better idea.
