Even more reason to do so then.

I totally agree. I wear the kilt for two main reasons:
    1) To show an allegiance to my Scottish heritage
    2) In defiance of the old law forbidding such garments

The fact that I'm unbelievably comfortable was a fortunate side effect.

I just wear it because I like to. Anything else (history, heritage, making a political statement) is coincidental to that.

    Not only Scots.

The problems in the Middle East and the Balkans for instance appear to be pretty clear examples of the danger of too much of a focus on History as a basis for current behavior.

    Larry,

That's a bit of an unfair comparison, don't you think? I don't see anyone urging others to go out and kill sassenachs.

I don't wear a kilt to stir up past hatreds, I wear it to honour the memory of my ancestors and their achievements. Yes, I do tease a friend of mine on occasion (A Bruce) about stealing the throne from us, but that's all in good fun, just as my wife's family teases me for being a "Yankee".

Folks, tolerance is a two-way street. I have no problems with those of you who wear kilts for "comfort" or "freedom", but I would hope the respect would be returned.

The Lakota have a saying: "a people without history are like the wind in the buffalo grass."

Yes I agree that that is an exaggerated example.

Just a caution (albeit remote in this case) that attaching historical (that is to say political) meanings to items of dress is maybe best done in small and friendly doses.

Witness the occasional "wouldn't wear it" comments in other topics on the supposed connotations of specific tartans, or of saffron.

I am certainly proud of my Scottish heritage, yet I think I just enjoy being kilted!
