SMC 12A.14.075 Unlawful use of weapons to intimidate
    another.

    A. A person is guilty of unlawful use of weapons to intimidate another
if he or she carries, exhibits, displays or draws a dangerous knife,
any knife with a blade that is open for use or a deadly weapon other
than a firearm in a manner, under circumstances, and at a time and
place that either manifests an intent to intimidate another person or
warrants alarm for the safety of other persons.
I wonder if the bit in the middle applies to a sheathed sgian? Maybe a sheathed sgian might be considered in the same light as a folding penknife?

    Cheers

    Bruce

I have the same problem in Philly, and I use a bottle opener with a decorative handle. Mine doesn't look like a knife handle, and that is the point for me. Regardless of legality, I've ran into more than a few people who aren't too comfortable with someone carrying a blade around. And, how many times do you have to be stopped to prove the blade is legal before it isn't worth the hassle? I use the real sgian for fests, private events, etc, and use the opener for being out in public.

Actually, unless there is something in the SMC that has been omitted, it seems to me that the law only prohibits the carrying of fixed blade knives with a blade length in excess of 3.5 inches. That being the case a sgian dubh would be legal to carry unless the blade was longer than 3.5 inches. I seriously doubt that any police officer would waste his time checking out your sgian dubh...

The minute you give up your rights because you think proving their existence is a hassle is the minute that you no longer deserve those rights.

That being said...my experience is that most officers of the law won't take the time to pull out their standard issue ruler and measure the length of the blade on your sgian.

I am happy to discuss any of the enforcement/interpretation aspects of the Seattle Municipal code (as that is where this thread seems to have veered) with anyone interested.

However, may I respectfully suggest that it be done via email or p.m.?
