Can anybody identify this tartan?

I can't. It may not even be a true tartan. I found it at a fabric store this evening. It looks to be a very nice quality twill weave. It's cotton, but for a first traditional kilt attempt, I think it fits the bill perfectly (read: cheap....) It's also a nice weight and feels like it would hold a pleat well enough. (Again, not trying to replace a worsted wool here, just trying to find something cheap for a first traditional kilt attempt.)

Any ideas? Similar to Farquharson and many others, but not exactly like any that I can think of off the top of my head.

I've looked it up and the only thing I can say is that this tartan (if it is a tartan) is a variation of the MacArthur tartan, due to the red stripe, but might be a fashion tartan. Matt would likely know.

Most likely. I might give it a go anyway and throw it away when I'm done. For 4 bucks a yard for double width, I don't know if it'd matter much to me.

I haven't a clue about the tartan but a word of caution - the sett is very small here. That could make pleating a challenge. Oh - I'm especially fond of the word flammable on the bolt!

Thanks for the link. I've seen that site as well and may order something from them. I also have my eye on some Nova Scotia tartan in cotton on ebay, but waiting to hear back from the seller.

I think they put flammable on all of their bolts. The material was 100% cotton, so it's no more flammable than 99% of my t-shirts.

The "sett" appeared to be about 4.5". I didn't actually measure it though (that might have been a good idea.)

For something to use to try the traditional kiltmaking this should work if you base the sett on the red stripes and possibly pleat to the red stripe. If you are using Barb T's book, it will help learn the ins and outs of her instructions on some real inexpensive fabric. I have one in an all cotton of a similar type "tartan" that I use as an around the house kilt. The fabric is to light to trust in a breeze, so it used for when I step from the shower, until I get my day kit on.

I like the pattern a lot. I don't recognize it as any major pattern that I've seen. I've got a noname pattern kilt as well, got it off ebay. it is similar to the irish revenge from sportkilt but minus the greenish color. It is the kilt in my avatar.

I had something similar in my "practice kilt" fabric from the remnants table. I used a double sett per pleat, yielding a nice pleat depth and using about the right length of fabric (without making a really tiny pleat reveal).
