Kilted at the Carnival
Just got home after visiting the Fire Department Carnival in Winfield, Md. Walking around, watching the looks on people's faces, standing in line for pit pork. (Yum). When 3 young ladies walk up to me and want to talk about the kilt. "Are you Scottish" Aye, Lassie. "My friend just got back from Scotland" I'm sure she had a good time. "Will you ride a ride with me?" No, thanks, I'm here with my wife. Then, my wife says, "Why didn't you ride with her. It would have made her day?" Uh, yeah, sure. with a 14 year old. Maybe I just look stupid. But all in all, they were very respectful of the kilt. After we watched the fireworks, we went back down to the carnival to walk around some more. An older woman comes running up behind me to tell me that her sister was just married and all the groomsmen were in kilts. I asked why I wasn't invited. She said next time. Then I go to a food stand and get my wife a tube steak. The guy behind the counter stumbles over himself trying to ask me a question. "Whats the occasion?" I said I was representing the Scottish Government. We want to have fund raising carnivals for our Fire Departments. How many hotdogs do you have to sell for a new piece of apparatus. He started in describing fund raising in the US. I just had to say something to the fund raising chairman of the local fire department. Oh, Well, must learn to keep the mouth shut. With all the redneck teenagers there, things went surprisingly well. A good time was had by all. Going to another carnival next week. 1 each week all through the summer.

Sounds like a good time! I may try to put in an appearance at the Colorado Irish Fest this weekend, if time allows. Solace and The Elders are performing.
So- one of my favorite responses to "what's the occasion" is "I woke up this morning and still had the ability o convert oxygen into carbon monoxide." That leaves 'em thinking long enough for me to make an escape. Which actually makes me think of a new thread...
EDIT- I'm listening to Sunny Spells And Scattered Showers now.

Good on you!
A kilt may not be a costume, but I find that an attitude of willingness (eagerness even) to employ a little theatrical improvisational wit is a very useful and enjoyable kilt accessory.

Did they not notice the lack of a Scottish accent Frank? Or were you being really devious and putting one on? Sounds like you had a fun day.

Some people around here barely understand Engish. I call their dialect " Huh?" I would never attempt the Scottish accent without proper instruction. Can you work with me while you are here?
