Ghille Brogues are not required... except for dancing perahps... there are many people on here who have absolutely no time for the ghillie shoes, a good sensible black lace up shoe or a buckle is what many of us choose.Have a look through the formal picture gallery to see some photographs, ( but you may have opened a can of worms... because not everyone agrees!!)

Ghillie brogues are not the best for dancing - the laces tend to finish up on the floor if things get too energetic. Plus they are usually outdoor shoes with fairly heavy soles. I agree with paulhenry though, black or brown brogues look very nice with the kilt and you can wear them with the dreaded p@nts too, something you can't with ghillies. I wear these for dancing and formal wear generally - as they are more comfortable and much easier to wear.

The shoes that Phil is wearing are the ultimate dress shoe, but, for dress wear, black(not brown) brogues, well polished, will be fine,.I happen not to be a fan of ghillie brogues under any circumstances.

I like my ghillie brogues. Buckle brogues look like the shoes little girls wore when I was in elementary school in the 60s.
 Wingtips are a good alternative.

I just polish up a black, buckled shoe for formal events, though the buckle on my shoe is about 1/8th the size of DWFII's!
