The book 'So You're Going To Wear The Kilt' gives a good description on how to make and change the toorie on the Balmoral. If you can find one ready made (and the right size) as suggested, all the better. Like you I don't like the red toorie (tradition or no tradition) and I enquired with a well respected Highlandwear specialist some years ago about getting one with a black toorie and he knew what I meant but said "I've no seen wan o' those furr years". Yes 'Golly' (now there's someone who does look good in a kilt!)did wear one in 'Monarch of The glen' so I suppose they must be traditional.
The Kilt is my delight !
