Linen sounds good too. I'd like a shirt I could wear outside the kilt.

I like linen shirts. They will wrinkle, but so does cotton. I will not wear synthetics, personally. I like silk too, or silk/linen blend. Hemp is nice too in the right weight. Kinda spendy, though, compared to the others.

For either of those pattern I would go with cotton or linen, type/weight depending on how warm you want it to be.

While I'm not too keen on synthetics, they have come a looong way. My only question is how important is it that you can drop it in the washing machine, take it out of the dryer and put it right on? 100% cotton or linen can be a bear to iron out smooth, and that takes time. A blend of say 35/65 poly/cotton can come out of the dryer and go right on your back. Yes, it will look sharper if ironed, but that is mostly just touch up. Again, the choice is up to you. I would, however, avoid 100% polyester, as that can get a slimy feel on a hot day very quickly.

No one's mentioned muslin, which makes for a nice material in a kilt shirt. And I heartily agree on enjoying a longish shirttail. (which makes sense, since I'm 6'6" tall) lol

Both shirt styles look okay, because if you are making them, go for variety. I would use linen and/or silk, and make them long, like the old nightshirt.
