They're rutabagas... like turnips with yellow flesh.
I'd try doing a roasted mash out of them instead of a boiled mash..... Bake the swedes and potatoes until all soft and the potatoes are fluffy inside, skin them, then whip them up with butter and a bit of cream. DELISH.
I loves me some smushed root veg.
