I'm entering my first games this Saturday in Spokane. I'd set some goals, but the only throw I've been training & measuring is the Open Stone. I'm throwing in the low 30's consistently. So, I just hope I don't make a fool of myself in everything else Anyone else going to Spokane?

Throws are -eh ok--knee is coming along

Here's what I hit at last practice (my wife was measuring BEFORE she began drinking beer )

    Open stone (17lbs) 35 ft.

    Braemer (22 lbs) 29 ft

WFD 28 lbs (mine is actually 24 lbs) 46 ft

WFD 56 lbs (55 lbs) 18 ft (I too damned small for this!--I wind up searching for my kibbles after each toss)

Heavy Hammer (22 lbs) 33 ft (see excuse above)

Light Hammer (16 lbs) 43 ft.

WOB 56lbs--sad 9 '--(see 'kibbles' comment above)

Here's the gist. I think my form/technique on the stones and 28 # WFD is my saving grace.

The knee rehab is showing in the torque needed for hammers. As for heavy WOB--hey it is what it is until I can REALLY train on it I guess.

Here's the question: Does this look like I'm on track ( 43 yrs old, 185 lbs) ?

First off how long have you been throwing?

Second, I'm too new to know be able to comment on if you're on track or not and the only thing I can compare to is how my group of 5-6 people have been throwing after only two months of practice. I would definitely agree with your assessment though that your stones and your LWD are pretty good throws. As for the hammers and the WOB like you said, all you can do is pratice.

The key I've learned is to have good form/footwork, and the ability to generate momentum. If you're spinning and the weight rips out of your hands, that means you are generating a good amount of torque, however you will need to work on your grip strength. We had a pro come out and shows us the ropes a few weeks ago, and it did wonders for us. We knew we were doing something right when we could barely hold on to the weight, and then with a little more practice and more grip strenghth we started to set new records for ourselves.

My suggestion would be to visit the NASGA website and find out if anyone in your area practices and join up with them for at least one practice. Good luck!

    Thanks,

Yeah footwork seems to be key for me--getting my knee to respond in the ACK brace and trust that its gonna be where I want it ;-) but hell--the practice is FUN!

I threw shot in school, so when I started all this craziness 2 years ago, my form sort of snapped right back. I'm 're-larning' good mechanics by really focusing on each small movement during the Braemer--from the turn of the toe, kneemovement, hip movement and how that all translates to 'uncurling' before my release. Its funny how foucsing on the small bits makes the rest flow--and my movement is a lot quicker now.

My plan is to break the hammer down into the same 'bits' for practice.

Goals, as this will be my last game of the season I have some lofty goals. I started the season as a novice in my first game and did well. My second game was a C level and again did well. From there on I have been a B, because I got signed up late for the events, and that was all that was available. I did terrible in Portland, OR, but won the B at Enumclaw, WA. So Kelso, Wa is the final game of the season for me. Here are my respective goals.

    LWFD-62' (I Hit 60' regularly in practice)
    HWFD-28' (usually around 25')
    WFH-12'6" (12' is my PR)
Light Hammer-85' (My worst event with a PR of 80')
Heavy Hammer-70' (my second worst event with a PR of 62')
    Open Stone-39' (currently 36' to 37')
    Braemer-35' (currently 30' to 32')
Caber-a qualified turn (best was 18'8" with a 2:30, I just got a new stick to practice with at 20' about 100#, now I only have a 15' at 90#. I need to get my timing down better.)
    Sheaf-22' (best in game 18', practice 20' with a 20# sheaf)

    Throw high and far!!

    James

I will give an update after the Kelso games.

    re

Wow. Looks to me like your ready to move to A class. I'm going to stay as a C class for my 3rd games this time, didn't make quite good enough numbers yet.

This is my first year of pipe competition. I'd like to win grade 5, after having played for five years. It's a goal.

I came very close to breaking 90 on my lightweight as well. I have an 89' 4" throw, winning the field in hammer and even took extra attempts. At this point though my head started getting into it and I was over thinking the throws, and my best is still the 89' 4". Next time though!
    WOOOHOOOOO!!!!!!!
