I was lucky enough to be able to view a copy of The Death of General Wolfe by Benjamin West a few weeks ago. (There were five pained by West all slightly different) The Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto has one of them and a brilliant display. It lists the reactions to the painting (and the battle) from the point of view of Anglo-Canadian, a Francophone and an aboriginal leader. The three opinions give a great insight how this battle and it's result affects Canadian culture today.
It is an amazing painting and does induce a powerful emotional response from the viewer not matter the ethic background.
