here's another look, but I like how McMurdo's is tied.

Basically it is the same knot you use to tie shoe laces, or a bow tie. The only problem is that the ribbon is not bias cut as a tie is, and therefore has no stretch in it. It doesn't want to stay tied.

My advice is to tie it as tightly as you are able, get it adjusted to look just right, then put a couple of stitches through the knot to hold everything in place.

I have to say that I've never seen balmoral ribbons tied like that or Glen's in my neck of the woods, so it's new to me. Most of the tied ones I've seen have been on military balmorals, and the ribbons and knot are quite a bit smaller, with the ends horizontal. Just an observation, that's all, and maybe I'm not very observant.

Neither have I and I think that Jock you were meaning a simple eye knot. This allows the tails to hang down together. They are a tad shorter but if you throw a stitch in the middle of the the knot it won't move.

I am not quite sure what you mean by "simple eye knot",but the knots on the four of my balmorals are the same as you would use to tie a bow tie and the result is the same. No hanging down bits at all. You all could follow my brother's route and just cut the ribbons off!
