So unless there are skinheads and skinheads...I'm staying away from skinheads.
Wow... I'm very sorry to hear that. Like you said, there are skinheads, and there are skinheads. There are the violent, racist types, and there are the the type that are all about good music, 60s Mod-influenced fashion, and working class pride. I assure you, I am the latter, not the former.
The wikipedia article I linked might clear a few things up for you.

The skinheads were scary in their day. Perhaps now they do fall into those two groups - but how do you tell which is which?

I'm not going to discuss this fully, because in my opinion it borders on political discussion, but I will say this...
Polished boots, Ben Sherman or Fred Perry shirt, pants that fit, likes reggae and/or ska= not racist
Scuffed boots or "skate" shoes with red laced, head completely bald, baggy pants, likes hardcore or metal= probably racist.
Another important distinction to make (and an attempt to get this thread back on topic) is that a racist skin probably wouldn't be caught dead in a kilt!

And dragging the topic wholly back on-topic...

I've usually got on a (heavy-metal) band t-shirt, mid-calf boots with black or dark blue hose rolled down to the top with my kilts. My favourite kilts are my 8 yard 16 oz Blackwatch (Tartanweb) and 8 yard Desert Camoflage (Scotweb) along with the black sporran shown in my avatar (pictured with 5yd arctic camoflage).
I see a lot like this at festivals (although I seem to be the only one outside of festivals) however they tend to be nasty cheap festival kilts with what looks like less than 1 inch pleat depth.

That's a Wacken Open Air top in the avatar (metal festival in Wacken, Germany). Bands like Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, Pantera, Metallica, Megadeth, Devil Driver, Dimmu Borgir, Arch Enemy, Children of Bodom.

Those that frightened the hell out of me back in the day met the first description and not the second, in fact I never saw any like the latter. Maybe they aren't the same these days, and somehow I feel sure that I must be a lot older than you, but I feel a lot safer on the other side of the street/not in the same room. Sorry.
I agree that I wouldn't worry about a skinhead if he were wearing a kilt, though.
Editted to add that back then I used to wear Ben Sherman shirts myself. Most guys did, but we didn't have clipped hair or wear DM boots, and those who did were usually trouble. I had a friend at school who was a skinhead who was completely harmless, but I wouldn't have taken a chance with someone I didn't know. It might have been the last thing I did. I'm talking about the late '60s and early '70s. Anything going on now is basically a revival.
