Why it is considered so important I do not know.
I learned that in ROTC. It's like that because men could stick their weapon hands into their clothes to keep it warm, (left handed people were forced to be right handed) and because women shouldn't have weapons (traditional, I bet there are a dozen reasons that sounded good to them as for why at the time) they don't need to keep their weapon hands warm.

I have a Thrifty kilt (Stillwater) that I wear to tide me over until I can afford various kilted skirts in my Griffith tartan, and other tartans that mean a lot to me. I wear it low on the hips (the only way one would fit me), and it falls below my knee. The fell isn't stitched down and there isn't a lot of yardage to it. To be honest, I also ordered it to see what they were like. My husband has the Standard and while we love it, I'm not sure I would buy a Thrifty for my husband. It doesn't have quite the swing to it that I love seeing on him.

I will be competing in Highland Games, and will be wearing a kilt. Somehow, I think the kilt will be the least of my worries about "looking manly"

I would also love to learn bagpipes, and intend to look into it down the line when I'm ready. I may join a pipe band, and I will wear what they want me to wear -- a uniform that includes a kilt.

As far as kilted skirts, I intend to have as many different lengths (mini kilts, no micros for me, ankle length, below the knee length) in a nice kilt-like construction (wrap-around, 3 straps, etc) in all the tartans I want, as well as sashes for those times I'm not wearing a kilted skirt.

My husband certainly doesn't complain at the thought (quite the opposite, in fact) and it doesn't make him feel any less like he's wearing a man's garment when he wears his kilt.

I also don't completely view the "women have so much and take everything else" thing. My husband is more into clothing than I ever was. He takes great pride in saving up and buying a nice, tailored suit. He takes great pains in selecting colored/textured accessories as well as shoes. Some men also get manicures and have their eyebrows groomed. I've been getting on my husband about that one, in fact. It's not so much that it's a "woman only" thing, but that he doesn't like pain (you get used to it trust me). He's bought clothing and accessories more recently than I have, and he enjoys reading fashion blogs. Things that people typically view women as doing. This doesn't make him any less manly, either.

Things are what you make them.

Wear the kilt with pride. It's VERY masculine on a confident male, and very attractive. Like many of the women here who wear a kilt, they view it with respect and know what it is. Trust me, we aren't wanting to take it from men. We definitely like it on them.

But kilted skirts? I'm sorry.... I'm not wanting to see my husband wearing a mini kilt or an ankle length kilted skirt. They're not kilts. A lot of clothing is based off of other things, and that's what those are. I do like those, as do many people, and I will wear the kilt itself as a uniform or when I need to, knowing exactly what it is.

Oh, so now maintaining two eyebrows is unmanly! Real men have one long eyebrow!

I'm just joking, Cynthia. Keep after him.

There's nothing wrong with any of that, but I do have to deal with the "REAL MAN" attitude a lot out here. In fact, a lot of my family members have that issue and I usually end up avoiding them.

Back in the eighties, when I was a kid, there were a bunch of shoes that were basically the same, but the boy shoes were supposed to have a strip of leather across the front of the toe. If you were a boy and you ended up with shoes that didn't have that strip, you were a target. I remember a few other things like that.

On the other hand, it seems to have changed quite a bit over the last decade or so...

That's what my wife needs, an ankle length kilted skirt. She always complains skirts don't have enough weight and claims that is why she doesn't wear them...

No offence, but Ladies in Scotland have been wearing Kilted skirts for a lot longer than we men have been wearing Kilts. We did kinda steal it from them :P (I know the whole history of how the Kilt was formed. A fact's a fact.)

A woman wearing a Kilted skirt (Or any tartan skirt for that matter) looks wonderful. And while I prefer women in a slightly more feminine version of the Kilt I am happy for them to wear Kilts or jeans or ballgowns or whatever they want.
Ladies, in general, are lovely. And whatever they choose to wear does not in any way threaten my masculinity or cause me any issues in my Kilt wearing.

It strikes me that your very 'spirited' opinions seem more like those who call us Kilt wearing mess 'crossdressers' than it does a man who is secure in his Kilt wearing.

    Interesting thread.

The first time I ever saw a woman wearing a kilt was at a University of Iowa football game in the early 1950's. There was a petite young lady (strawberry blond, as I remember) wearing the traditional Scottish Dancer outfit, who did some of the highland dances on a large bass drum held on the shoulders of four stout lads. The drum was of course held with the head in a horizontal position. It was a spectacular show and the sound was, as I remember it, magnificent.

There were lots of complaining letters about a "girl" wearing a man's garment in the paper afterward but none whatsoever about any of the female band members wearing trousers.

The more things change, the more they stay the same!
