Why if they weren't 'round...what would we put our gear in?

Come on. They are round so your gold and diamonds don't get caught in the corners.

As I read through the response, I was thinking just about what Thunderbolt was thinking: throw some stuff in the middle of any piece of fabric or hide and gather up the perimeter and tie it up and attach it to your belt...simple. What we have now is just the evolved form of a very simple, primitive functional object.

...of course, it is possible that they are round because sporran flasks are round and that's what should be in the bottom of any well run sporran.

It is easier to scoop things out of a round sporran. Coins, certainly. Oatmeal, definitely.

I don't own a sporran proper, relying mostly on the canvas pouch that comes with my AKs. Occasionally I use a leather bag when I feel a little more dressy.

Yesterday I was doing a little more walking than usual while wearing the leather 'non-sporran' and I could distinctly feel the corners poking the inside of my thighs when walking. It didn't leave a mark or anything but was definitely annoying.

Is this why traditional sporrans are rounded in shape at the bottom?

I was under the impression that they are round because they were to hold your Quaiche.

It also is a question of strength.

The round shape distributes weight/stress evenly throughout the pouch.

A squared shape's corners would tend to focus that weight / stress.

The seams / stitching on the corners have to take that weight / stress.

Which makes those seams /stitching more likely to break.

When then break then your flask falls out of the hole in your sporran.

    And you lose your whisky.

Therefore sporrans are round because the Scots love their whisky.

    So now you know!
