Welcome to Xmarks. I think the general opinion is that the great kilt is mostly worn for festivities, holidays, etc whereas the 'modern' (or as some call traditional) kilt is more formal and more conventional for day to day wear. But all type of kilters and kilts are welcome, one and all, as well as their opinions. I love seeing people prove convention wrong, even (and maybe especially) when it's my convention.
