You are correct it is a continuation of Masonry, in fact it has often been called the graduate school of Masonry and consists of the degree work form the 4th through the 32nd degree. Now to enlighten you further the Shriner's are also a sub-sect of the Masonic Order, in fact you are not entitled to belong to either Scottish Rite, York Rite, or Shriner's until you have become a Master Mason.
