Kilt on New Years? Yes or No?

A lady friend of mine is coming to visit over the holidays. She lives on the other side of the country and we have been close friends for years. She moved out there long before I purchased my kilt and she wants to see it in person and not just in pics. She was hoping that we could go out for New Years and dance, dinner, at a semi-formal type of event just for fun. She also asked if I would wear my kilt that night so she could see me in it.

Now, I don't have any problems wearing my kilts, but I also wish to take care of it. And I can't help but think that a large group of rowdy people, perhaps a bit too indulgant with the booze, will be making all sorts of wise *** comments, unwanted kilt checks, and perhaps leading to a few harsh conflicts.

Anyone been in a similar situation and what is your advice?

Go for it. I've gone to bars (not pubs) kilted and had absolutely no problems. The sage advice of others here has always been "be confident and you'll have no difficulties."

I go all the time, no problems. Yet if the situation looks like it is going to turn bad avoid the situation.

Where are you planning on going? I'm sure that some venues will be more, shall we say, reserved than others...choosing wisely might allay some of your concerns.

That having been said, sorry...it comes with the territory. This forum is full of tales of kilt checks (welcome and non), insults and lame jokes directed at members of the Kilted Brethren (and Sistren). It is also full of snappy come backs and ripostes that have been used on said violators of our dignity and privacy. The general consensus is that a kilty who keeps his cool will maintain his dignity and avoid any nasty tussles. Walk tall, keep your sense of humor sharp and maintain an even strain...you shall abide.

So by all means...wear the kilt, party on and live it up like kilted Wayne Newton!

I agree, dress for the occasion, if a tux would be appropriate, wear a silver buttoned Argyle with formal shirt, vest and tie, if a suite/sport coat, then leave off the vest, wear the belt and four-in-hand tie. Also you know the locales best, avoid the drunken brawl situation and everything would be fine. (the dbs is to be avoided kilted or no.)

My attitude has always been- screw 'em. If they don't like, they can kiss my Celtic back side. "I am my island. My island is me. You know what you can do, if you don't like what you see."
"Two things are infinite- the universe, and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein.
