I am kilted at my male voice choir rehearsals, but am in the standard choir uniform for concerts.

If the choir has dispensation to wear what they wish for the occasion then by all means wear a kilt as formally or informally as you wish.

If you are, as you say, in a Choir loft, and the Choirmaster is ok, then go for it. A vest + tie would also be good. If it is like ours on Christmas Eve, it gets HOT!

My experience with Catholic churches is that it doesn't much matter what you wear. Maybe yours is different, but my father-in-law--a Caotholic--claims his church is worst dressed bunch of people in the world. This is not a religious comment, just a fact. And the fact is, clothes aren't too important in most Catholic or protestant churches around here. (I, personally, prefer to dress in coat, tie, etc. when in church, but I'm an anachronism. And I do have an argyl jacket and vest!)

If you wear a robe, as many choirs do, who will care? If you aren't going to be seen much, who will care? If you are seen, once the novelty of a kilt is over, who will care? I don't think God will.

I would say to try to match the rest of the choir's level of formality as mentioned above, and don't worry about it. I suspect you'll be more concerned than anyone else will be. And, as mentioned above, you can ask the choir director or the priest. If it's a big deal, then wear trousers. Otherwise, wear a kilt like most of us will and be thankful you live where most people really don't care what you wear.

Your results may vary. Everyone's situation is different. For me, I regularly show up at church kilted, both trad. and my UK. I also show up wearing a Sri Lankan sarong from time to time (only when it's warm out though). So far, no one has said a negative word -- and it's a fairly evangelical crowd (pastor is ordained Assemblies of God). Then again, I play keyboard in the band (which is pretty loud and rocky) so I often wear outfits to match the style of music we tend to play...

As long as I keep wearing male clothing, the fact that it's unbifurcated doesn't seem to be an issue. They are very wise to realize that men haven't always worn pants. However if I ever showed up in stockings and stilettos, I'm sure the church leadership would want to have more than a few words with me.. lol!

The only comment I received from the pastor was a word of caution -- he said: "I hope you realize that kilt wearers often tend to get made fun of or ridiculed by some." I thanked him for his concern but assured him that I knew full well how to deal with such individuals if and when they come up.

I'd say -- as long as you aren't in fact causing a disturbance, go for it.

It is my intent to sing Ave Maria in full kilt, with a Christmas cummerbund and bow tie. That is if I can get the music director to agree to me singing, other wise I'll just be in the kilt. I have a new Gordon that should do nicely.

You should be fine dressing to the level of the other people in the choir. My personal choice would be a sweater over a shirt and tie.
