I got the comment at church this Sunday (I was wearing a Utilitkilt workman's). I said that in cold weather I don wool socks and pull them up, and with 8 yards of wool wrapped around my middle, the only cold part is the knees. The reaction was a goggle-eyed "Eight yards!!!!????"

A wis asked the cold question about 2 weeks ago at bowling league... to which A replied rather simply, The higher the socks, the colder the weather.
Given that it was rather warm out, -20c not including the wind chill, A only had me regular runabout socks on. As to when A would put on me wool kilt hose, A left that up to thier imagination.

I expect I'll get the "cold" question today. I'm heading to the town's Remembrance Day ceremonies in a few hours and I plan to be kilted. It's currently -11C outside. Hopefully I'll get some pics to post later.

That would be the Loco Lizard. I recall that you and I got the cold question the night of Turpin's visit while we were outside the restaurant after dinner.
Sort of off topic, I stumbled into another kiltie the other day at the Adopt a Native Elder rug show. Frankly I wouldn't have noticed her if she hadn't noticed me. I heard a voice say "Hey, another kilt!" So, I turned to her and asked if there was another kilt at the show. She looked down. She was wearing a khaki Utilikilt. [facepalm]

PiobBear and RiverKilt, you guys crack me up! Seriously, I think the one-liners are one of my favorite parts about knowing guys who wear kilts.

I don't wear hats, but for their utilitarian value, which means in the brutal heat of summer, I can wear a wool kilt with a broad-brimmed straw. And in the winter, I'm quite cozy in wool kilt and a glengarry. I'm much warmer in a cap and no cold-weather jacket than when I'm in a jacket and no cap. Same holds true for the kilt and topper.

This should not be surprising, as there is more blood pumped to the head than anywhere else in the body, except perhaps the lungs. (I used to know the percentages, but am too lazy to look them up right now.)
At this latitude (33 n) it never gets very cold in the winter, so kilt hose are fine. I'm not so sure I would want to go kilted in the very high latitudes where the temp is -40, either C or F. (take your pick).

I wish digital photography was around forty years ago. The pictures of me in the wintertime in Minot, N.D. kilted were near such things as outdour thermometers and signs. At -30 F. I was quite toasty in 8 yards of 16oz wool, kilt hose and Arron sweater, with a Glengarry. My mates were in jeans and Parkas... and shivering. I got asked to "cold" question by many men and women that winter. They could not understand the difference of two yards of 6 oz cotton in the form of trousers over eight yards of 16 oz wool, when I at the time had a 28" waist (kilt), trousers were size 26.
I guess I should have knitted that sheep....
