I remember going to see that as a small boy - my grandfather took me. It was called The Drum in the UK, and Drums in the USA. Roger Livesey played Captain Carruthers, didn't he? And Raymond Massey was some Indian rajah.
The story was by A. E. W. Mason, who famously wrote The Four Feathers about the relief of Khartoum. He served in the Manchester Regiment and then the Royal Marines Light Infantry in World War I, leaving as a Major, so he had first-hand experience of what he was writing about. I think he wrote a few short stories that were published in The Boy's Own Paper, mostly about deeds of derring-do in the Empire. All frightfully politically incorrect, of course.

Roger Livesey played Captain Carruthers, didn't he?
The same Roger Livesey who played General Clive Wynne-Candy of the Loamshires in The Life & Death of Colonel Blimp.
It's been ages since I've seem Drums, but from what I remember it was a ripping yarn!
All frightfully politically incorrect, of course.
Well said that man.
I happened to be watching another movie of that ilk this morning -- The Guns at Batasi -- no kilts, but Sir Richard Attenborough as RSM Lauderdale!
Yours aye,
Todd

What luck to have stumbled on your thread! Just turned in at 12:05. Here is a photo of my great uncle James Robertson with the Liverpool Kings in India during this time. Uncle Jim is standing.
