As it has been said the only place where heat will be an issue is where the kilt comes in close and constant contact ie at the waist. That being said I have the Black Stewart in a SWK and in a 4yrd Locharron worn both summer and winter with no problem ( I might add that even though I am in ND last summer saw temperatures up at 106F--wore kilts wool and acrylic without problems in fact I was more comfortable than tr-----d men )
As far as being too formal I wear the Black Stewart casualy without problem, in fact the Lochcarron is
a "casual" kilt made for hiking or hillwalking as they say.

While I don't have links to this, I have read an article discussing the weather or not black robes were warmer/cooler than white ones among Bedouins. The conclusion was that there was no disernable difference.

    Djellabas and heat exchange

Seriously, there was am article in Nature a number of years ago regarding the heat exchange in white djellabas (the loose tunic of the middle east) and black ones. The result was a tie. The white had less heat from radiation but the black lost mosre heat from convection (air rising up and escaping). I would think that a kilt would be good at dissapating heat only if u were moving and "spilling" the hot air as there is no easy exit with the belt in place. Another observation, the eskimos' outside clothes are not tailored but just a "bell" shaped tunic which fits snugly about the face. The body heat rises and stays inside the bell, the moisture condenses on the inside of the bell and freezes, easily shaken out before entering the igloo.

Hmmmmmmmm, maybe if you put a small chimney in the kilt running up through the waist band to help remove the hot air.....

I think the Black Stewart to be an extremely handsome tartan. I know that the Royal Stewart is considered universal but what about the Black?

Black Stewart is as appropriate for day wear as it is for evening wear. In fact, at least in my opinion, it is one of the best looking "after six" tartans a gentleman can wear.
