You need to find your true waist, then try to get the top of the kilt a little above that. It's tapered all the way to the waistband, so it is going to squeeze your waist right at the bottom of the waistband especially on the sides and back.
My SWKs didn't quite fit right until I did some alterations, but hey it's off the peg.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
