Honor, Lady Lovat? Wow. Good thing I'm not young.
As to doublets--I voted for the Sherrifmuir for the reasons stated above. Expecially since you can expand your horizons a bit (read that last as a reference to the waistline) and still wear the thing. But I really do like the looks of it, especially with a great kilt.
But, I own a Montrose. And with the jabot and lace cuffs, nothing looks better. The white lace against the black material assures that I am dressed as well as anyone else, and it really is quite striking. I wear it with a white fur sporran (with black tassels), and lots of shiy silver and well-shined black leather. And I, too, have only heard complaints from ladies who dicided I outshone them with the doublet.
And trust me guys, wear the lace. Your women will love it.
But that's only for full dress/white tie functions. Mostly I wear a PC, just as boring as everyone else.
Fact is, the PC is a great black tie outfit.
