31st January 1933: English author and screenwriter Sir Compton Mackenzie (1883 - 1972) who found much of his inspiration in Scotland, his adopted home. Mackenzie worked as a soldier, secret service chief, actor, broadcaster and editor of 'Gramophone' but is best known as a playwright and author. He gave up studying law to write and published his first novel 'The Passionate Elopement' in 1911.
