Personally, I prefer marcella/cotton pique; but that may just be the soldier in me.

Why not? Many tuxedo shirts have pleated fronts. And the Prince Charlie jacket is the Highland dress equivalent of a tuxedo. So, why not?

For black tie dress, shirts may either pleated or piqué, per personal taste. The same will work with a PC jacket, in my opinion.

I am going to go with Jock on this one, though the only wing collared shirts I have worn have had the pleats; if I was going to purchase one it would be one with the flat bib front. Just looks sharper in my opinion. Nothing incorrect about the pleated one, though.
By the way is there some difference between pique and marcella or is it a case of two names for the same fabric?

In fact now that I think of it, it looks the same as the "royale oxford" of the white dress shirt I have, the right french cuff of which can be seen in my avatar.

Oh my my my. A PLAIN front shirt please. Highland dress is by its very nature "busy". Keep it simple where you can.
Of course you can always go out and buy a light blue dress shirt with four or even six rows of ruffles down the front.

I do wear a pleated tuxedo shirt and black studs with my pc. I'd never wear a shirt with ruffles.
