Having no direct relationship to Canada, other than spending some travel time there in my younger adult days, and skiing there once in a while as an adult, and simultaneously having a spouse who, although she doesn't earn the money directly does so indirectly by keeping me in line and on focus professionally and financially, added to the fact that she doesn't particularly like me kilted (says I look great, just not interested in a "man in a skirt"), and that money is a bit tight right now, and that I have fabric either in hand or on order for a 16 oz tank in Allen 1996 and 13 oz Forrester Hunting, and another two tanks already on order, plus another casual 6 yder in process at the same time, I have no realistic excuse for desiring the Maple Leaf tartan other than its sheer beauty, much like the excuse I used for buying my Isle of Skye last year. But she liked that one after I bought it (her favorite now, if you could call any of my kilts her favorite).
What do you think guys and gals, do I bite the bullet for another $100 worth of excellent quality fabric in a fantastic tartan and take my chances with the wife? Or play it safe and forego the purchase (her never knowing of my supreme sacrifice) in hopes that a similar or better opportunity may arise in the future at a more opportune time? Aaarrrggghhh. Yeah right. Now where is that vvisa card anyway?

Just remember that the Maple Leaf is an *asymmetric tartan*. This is an issue that you have to take into consideration because the tartan comes double width. If you order 4 yards double width, you'll have to put a hem in the kilt (because you can't rotate the tartan to get the sett and the twill lines to match once you've split a double width piece in half to get 8 yards). If you order 8 yards double width, you can split the tartan in half lengthwise and make two kilts out of the 8 yard, single width pieces. If two of you guys want to take advantage of the F&K remnants, it might be best to order one 8 yard piece and split it.

How I pulled off buying "yet more" fabric is that my father-in-law is Scottish born (now lives here in Vancouver) and has being hinting how he would like a kilt. Well, he is a great guy and deserves one. luckily, the tartan is asymmetrical ..so i "had" to buy 8 yards. Well, that happens to be enough for two kilts! The perfect win-win situation.
On a side note for those from the States - New England is full of beautiful maple trees - no need to be Canadian to feel a connection to this tartan.

Hockey fans could justify Maple Leaf as a Toronto fan thing or just as a hockey is Canadian thing. I like their anthem better anyway.

I love the ML tartan (an official Canadian tartan) and it will be my next kilt, but it's just bad timing.
I'll have you know I was alive the last time the leafs won the cup even though I was still in England and...
I digress, for any American concerned aboot wearing the ML without connection to Canada forget about it. We would be more than happy for you to wear our colours. When so many Americans couldn't find Canada on a map, for one to know the meaning and to wear it with pride and respect would be totally awesome.

Note to Colin; I know I've been away for a while and I might not have heard any news but I believe Maple Leaf is still an considered unofficial official tartan (this and Quebec). The only official use is with the Royal Canadian Regiment.

I'll have to leave that to Todd, but I believe it is an official tartan. It is recognized by the federal government along side the provincial tartans. Anyone know this one for sure? Todd? Matt? Barb?

Oh well :crap: Pulled the trigger on 4 yards before all this discussion. . . guess it's hemmed, unless someone else did the same and we can trade halves!
EDIT: I already have two inquiries on the excess, or it may go into a pair of slacks for my mother. Thanks!
