LL Bean offered shirts in the Armed Forces tartan but when I checked before Christmas I did not see them listed in their on-line catalog anymore.

I hope they reappear as I'd like to get a couple more as I have a close affiliation with all but the Coast Guard.

After rereading my own post, I realize it's kind of ambiguous.
Yes, we've all seen tartan shirts. I've owned a few of them myself, such as BW, Royal Stewart, etc. I'm wondering about your "own" tartan, such as clan-specific ones or district colors or others that are not the "generic" tartans found in stores and catalogs. What I'm trying to say is, does anyone have a buttoned, plaid-flannel-type shirt that matches your tartan kilt? I'm wanting to have one made in Lockhart, and then possibly Carolina, as well, but am wondering if that has been done before.

Well, my viyella shirt in ancient MacLean of Duart DOES match a kilt I have in the same tartan, I would not wear the two at the same time, though. The sett is slightly different, but the shirt and the kilt certainly are ancient MacL of D.

We have several MacLean Hunting tartan shirts, as well, in flannel. The are "modern" colours, and therefore are the same tartan as the Hunting MacLean of Duart kilt in modern colours that one of my sons wears right now. The flannel--and viyella--fades, though.

My grandfather, uncles, and fathers, used to have shirts made up in wool MacLean of Duart hunting tartan, which they would wear on fishing trips, and in the bush. Here is a photo of my mother and grandfather, taken in Quebec at my family's summer property:

If money is no option, it shouldn't be that difficult to have a shirt made in any tartan.

Yes! That's exactly what I'm thinking of! Instead of wearing their kilts, they wore their tartan as shirts. There are times when the kilt might not be the best choice of something to wear (notice I said "might" not be), but a person might still wish to wear a bit of tartan.
Thanks for that photo. It captures what I've been pondering for quite a while.
